Lose Weight In Your Sleep?

Recently I’ve been on a weight loss rampage — implementing a hardcore diet with weight training/cardio 6 days a week. I constantly monitor my weight on the scale about 2-3 times a day. But the most intriguing part is when I weigh myself before I sleep and once again when I wake up and to my surprise, the numbers don’t add up. I tend to be a full pound lighter when I wake up (pre-toilet) than before I sleep. But how?

I automatically assumed it would be due to sweating during the night but my bedsheets told me otherwise. I did some research and found out that it’s a little more than that.

Derek Muller, a physics teacher in Australia answered the question through one of his blogs.

So I’ll try to explain this in lamens terms. When we inhale, we take in oxygen (O2) and we exhale carbon dioxide (CO2) which means there is an extra carbon leaving our body every cycle of breath. Now a carbon atom weights virtually nothing but if every breath expels billions and trillions of atoms during the whole night? It could very well explain the weight difference.
